In this section of my Blog, I
will record all my progress in the Service section of CAS. I will need to
complete 50 hours for this section and provide evidence for this (pictures,
articles in the newspaper…). Some of the activities I will complete in
the future, some I am currently fulfilling and some I'm done
with. Each activity is in a different color or font and separated with some
sort of line. I hope you enjoy reading about my progress in the IB
Program!

Name of Activity: Student Council
Supervisor: Mr.
Farwell
Dates of activity: September 2013 - June 2014
Plan: During my participation in Student Council, I plan to help
with anything that calls for our responsibility; Organizing events,
babysitting if necessary, and communicate with the students about changes
they want or issues they want us to address. Because this activity is in
the Service Section of my Blog, I will focus on, obviously, service oriented
projects (e.g.. babysitting).

activity:
Wine and Cheese: 3 hours
(combined the 2 times I went)
General Event Planning and
Participation in those Events: 20 hours
Reciprocal Dance
Participation: 4 Hours

Our goal was to meet new
people there and have a closer relationship between schools. We meet many
people there and participated in their activities they had planned.
Reflection: For this activity, helped with various things around the school like babysitting and representing the school. This activity required 1. Planning and Initiation because we had to set up various activities and execute them. It also required 2. Development of New Skills because we had to do a lot of public speaking. My partner and I had to make speeches to our classmates about updates and announcements, which is something that I struggled with at first. This same situation required 3, Increased Awareness of Strengths and Weaknesses. The next Learning Outcome accomplished was 5. Consideration of Ethics because we all had to make hard decisions about the school and for the student body, even if not every one like that idea. Another Learning Outcome that I achieved was 6. Undertaking New Challenges because I had never previously been in Student Council. Also 7. Commitment to Activities was required because we had monthly meetings and babysitting dates. The last Learning Outcome was 8. Collaboration with Others because I had to work with my partner to create presentations for the class and to make speeches about updates.

Name of Activity: Advisory Committee
Name of Activity: Advisory Committee
Supervisor: Mrs. Galicia
Dates of activity: September 2013-June 2014
Plan: I plan
on helping the school with various actitivites for the students to do on select
Advisory Days. For this entry, I would like to help organized events over the
course of the year and plan individual event days throughout the
year.
Planned Evidence: I have
already helped largely with the planning of the October "Fright
Night", were we invited students from other schools who could participate
in our Haunted House / Hallway, our Dance, and a Fortune Teller
Tent.
We, as the advisory committee, has
helped organize several days throughout the year of activities,
usually based on the time of year.
Earth Day With the 7 Years Olds:
As part as Advisory, we were
assigned to help teachers in the lower elementary to converge their
class with the High School. Me and my partner were assigned the 7 year olds. We
had 2 classes that had 2 complete different ideas of what to do on
Earth Day. One class was going to do sun catchers and the other was going to
Shaved Crayon Earths. On our own time, me and my partner cam in and shaved
crayons for this project.
On the day, we each took a
class and mine was the Sun Catcher Project. I helped organize and get
everything together for the class. There was a total of 10 High Schoolers, and
8 Lower Elementary kids.

Hours spent performing
activities: 20
Reflection:
Earth day with the 7 year olds was really fun. We helped them make sun catchers and got to socialize with them. I was a little frustrating though at times because I was hoping we'd have a little more of a leadership role but the teacher felt that she had everything figured out. Also, I was the main leader of our group and it was hard to tell kids my own age that they should sit down or work with their buddies. Some of my classmates wouldn't help their buddies or would run around with them when we were suppose to be doing the activities. It was a little hard to tell them what to do but eventually I got them to concentrate.
The end of the project was also hard because we had about 30 minutes extra time. I knew we were going to have some extra time so I brought "Earth Day Bingo". The kids weren't really interested in it and it was hard to get them to participate. Someone else had the prizes so when I went to get them for the winners, they had already given all the prizes out to their whole class. So I had no prizes to give to anyone. Luckily the kids didn't really mind that we didn't have any prizes for them so they didn't get that annoyed. After that we just played "Heads Up 7 Up" with everyone to use up some time.
This project required 1. Planning and Initiation because we had to plan what to do for the kids and make sure it was entertaning and education for the kids. Another required Learning Outcome was 2. Increased Awareness of Strengths and Weaknesses because I learned that some games aren't very interesting to the kids and how to control a group of 7 year olds. This is also 4. Engagment with Global Issues because our whole activity was based on and around Earth Day and we had to consider environmental issues and conservation. The next Learning out come accomplished was 5. Consideration of Ethics because we were talking to the kids about what the moral "thing" to do with trash is, how it affects animals and the enviroment, and helping for the general good of the world. Another Learning Outcome achieved was 7. Commitment to Activities because me and my partner had to repeatedly research Earth games and relevant activities for the kids to play. 8. Collaboration with Others is another learning Outcome achieved because I had to work with my partner to create games and organize the day.
Activity: Humanitarian Club: Face Painting at the International Brunch
Supervisor: Mrs. Garner
Dates of Activities: September 20, 2014
Plan: At the International Brunch I painted about 5 different peoples faces and some other little "tattoos" of hearts and flowers and other kids. We were there for about 2 and a half hours.
Planned Evidence:
Hours Spent Preforming Activity: 2 and a half hours
Evidence Record: pictures to the left.
Reflection: During my Face Painting time, I painted about 7 different kids. They were all really excited to get to hang out with the "big kids" and get some paint on them! It was really fun to try and make conversation with the really little ones and hear about how much fun they were having at the International Brunch. But not all of them were as friendly. There were some kids that needed some coxing from their parents and from us but eventually we got them to not be afraid. It was also fun to try and understand where the kids were from because some of them didn't speak any English. We would ask, " Deutsch? Español? Slovenské? " Eventually we'd figure it out and create whatever they wanted.
Although they'd get whatever they wanted, it wasn't always perfect. Personally, I find it really hard to turn someone into something like a tiger. So when i was asked "Can you make me into a Tiger!" I was hesitant but I had to make it happen! Unfortunetly, when it was done, the little girl wanted to see herself in the mirror, and when I saw her again, she had washed off the paint. Its fine though because I made some other little girls really happy with some matching hearts!
Another challenge was having only a certain amount of "Face Markers". For instance, one of my partners were using the black but I needed the black as well so we had to tell the kids to wait for a while. Also the marker/crayons were a little flimsy so several of them broke in half. But we got creative and realized that we now had 2 red markers!
It was also hard to resist the aroma of International food from the stands so we had some people run and get us some!
Activity: Pancakes with Santa
Supervisor: Mrs. Garner
Date of Activity: December 13, 2014
Plan: I plan to participate in the this activty and help with the different boothes to entertain the kids before Santa arrives.
Hours Spent Performing Activity: 2 hours
Planned Evidence:
Reflection: For this activity, my partner and I helped to give temporary tattoos to kids at Pancakes with Santa. We were there for about socializing with the kids and attempting attract some kids over for some tattoos. This activity required 7. Commitment to Activities because we had to show on a timely matter. It also required 8. Collaboration with Others because me and my partner had to help the kids together to stay still and choose which tattoo they wanted, which at some points was a huge task.

Also 7.Commitment to Activities was a Learning Outcome achieved because we had to stay in the same area the whole time or else some kids wouldn't get their faces painted. The last learning outcome achieved was Collaboration with Others because for larger tasks, like a leopard, we had to work together to make the kid actually look like a leopard.
